SOCIO-ECONOMIC OUTLINE OF THE TWO AREAS
STUDIED
Venice and its Province
The
area occupied by Venice and its province is a very long strip
of coast between the River Tagliamento to the north and the
Adige to the south, so that in practice it connects Friuli
with Polesine. The province is densely built up, especially
in the centre: there are no fewer than 24 municipalities out
of the total of 44 with more than 10,000 inhabitants, including
Venice, the provincial capital and one of the symbols of Italy.
Population density is about 325 inhabitants per square kilometre,
which is well over the national average, with a total population
of more than 800,000 persons.
The demographic structure is affected, like that of most industrialised
areas, by a drop in the natural growth rate; the number of
births is in practice constantly lower than that of deaths.
This deficit, however, is made up for by a positive migration
figure, showing a marked characteristic of being directed
towards the outer part of the province. The question of lack
of equilibrium in the composition of the population is statistically
supported by the high old age ratio, calculated as the proportion
of those over 65 compared with those under 15, and the rise
in the number of dependants.
Leaving behind it a past characterised by heavy and chemical
industry, the Venice economy is now definitely directed towards
services, even if the influence of industry and fishing is
not insignificant. Venice, the coast and the Brenta Riviera
are the key points in a range of first class tourism attractions,
sector elements that have a very important place in the economic
structure of the province.
The Province of Venice is without any doubt one of the most
industrialised and advanced areas in the country: in 2003
it contributed 1.7% of Italy's added value, and was the only
province in the Veneto region to have registered growth in
comparison with 2002 (0.6%).
The present picture is completed by the more than 70,000 workplaces
and a labour force of 372,000. Nevertheless, the entrepreneur
rate is around the average, not high, while the unemployment
rate is 5%, about half the national figure.
